Suggestions

Is there something about the game that you think could be done better?
Do you have an amazing idea for a great plot that you want the mods to try and put into play?
Or do you just think you can give us some advice to make our jobs a little easier?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Please reply here with your suggestion and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

As someone who is interested in the game and completely canon blind, I think that it would be good to see the Locations page expanded upon. It may be helpful to others like me who are canon blind to see more general info about the worlds.

As it is right now, using the Locations section and the links included under World section of the FAQ, here are my estimate of what the worlds look like:

-Near Shore: basically RL as we know it including specific Noragami locations that are important to canon, people who live here can't normally see spiritual beings

-Far Shore: ...actually, I have no clue what this world looks like! All I'm really sure is that you can travel between the Near in Far via shrines

-The Heavens: Not really sure for this either. Looks sort of like Earth too? Is this part of the Far Shore or completely separate?

Some other questions I have that would be good to expand upon under Locations or the FAQ:
Shrines!
What do the shrines normally look like? Do they NEED to be located in Japan? Does the architecture have to match the god's origin? (For example, if I pick a god from the Baltic pantheon, does the shrine follow the sites you'd normally see in the Baltic states?)

Hey I was thinking it might be helpful to have a prayer-specific suggestion page. I imagine that's going to be a lot of work to keep things fresh and plentiful and it's something that anyone could easily contribute to if they have ideas for them. Alternatively a pair might even want to request a specific type of mission that's not currently available and that would be an convenient way for them to do so.

Can there be an event where shinkis and shinkis only get inflicted with one of the seven sins that could turn them into akayashis?

Going off of a discussion on plurk, can we get more defined terms of how the BBS works on the FAQ?

For instance, mention that anonymous posting and private messages are possible, since it's come as a surprise to some and newbies might not be aware. Also, can audio/video/etc be posted or is it a strictly textual forum? Can attachments be included on posts or sent in messages, as well?

ICly, can comments/posts be deleted from the BBS? And regarding network security, how secure is the Heavens' network? Is it extremely difficult to hack into, or is it relatively simple to do? If someone makes a locked post (if this is possible) would it be within the means of skilled hackers to get into?

I know this is a whole battery of questions, but we got to wondering about quite a few things.

Adding onto this, there was a suggestion that we implement IC usernames for the BBS and include them on the Taken Character list as seen here for player reference. Perhaps something characters register upon arrival in the setting?

So when I app to any game I always have trouble deciding things like which character to bring in as well as game specific things like what powers and which god, etc. It's also a little tough to get a feel for which characters and/or roleplay opportunities other players might be excited for. And it occurs to me that I might not be the only one.

Is there any chance of getting an enable me meme for potential apps? Just to help people get advice on things like powers or gods. Or narrow down their character choices. Or even find pair ups for their god/shinki. I think it might be really helpful.

So I'm gonna be honest because I just completely dumped all my feelings on plurk about this and I realized how long this has been bugging me.

I feel like shinki need something more to do. We've been low on shinki as long as I've been in the game. I play two of them, and at first I had no issues, but after playing one for nearly three months, I realize there are a lot of really major downfalls to paying shinki, and next to no benefits.

Shinki have like zero agency. They can't transform on their own, they can't use their powers. They have no memories, no ability to exist on their own. When there's a battle, if there's no god, they can't fight. And that's really limiting, at least in my experience.

Plus, memories are so hard to regain it's bordering on ridiculous. To gain back one memory, it will take Nageki from mid-June to the end of August. And while I understand that's not a lot of time in-game, that's a lot of time in real life. I consider myself moderately active. I have a life to live (and some serious intense learnin' to do), but doing the math, if I remain the same comfortable level of active, Kido will gain about 500 points a month, and it would take her nearly two years ooc to become a haifuri vessel. Considering it took this many months for anyone to reach 1000 exp/10000 followers, that seems unattainable, especially if I ever want her to regain any memories ever. It would have to be literally the only thing anyone ever planned to do with their character. Most games close before two years pass.

And the benefits of playing a shinki are barely there at all. The benefits for me are that I prefer to play servant-type characters. That's why I did it. But after nearly three months and Nageki has never been transformed even once, I'm starting to feel like there's no point to playing a shinki.

I feel like there has to be some sort of benefit. Gods get new powers that they can use at any time, the ability to create a temple that they live in, and the ability to fight. They get to keep their memories, so they have little to regain and they don't have to worry about points. But with the game being unbalanced, it's hard to think "I'll drop my characters and play gods instead" because the chance of them getting paired is low, and that's what I wanted from this game. But unless I made plans before apping, pairing has not worked out for me so far. And so it rounds back to "Nageki can't really do much without a god there with him" and "with a god she cares about, Kido will never be able to make personal progress because I want to make her a haifuri vessel."

TL;DR: Shinki can't do much, memory regains can take forever at a decent tagging pace, and absent gods mean having to sit things out. My experience has been difficult, and I've felt very stuck for some time now. And I'm not sure it's gotten any better in terms of the unbalance between god and shinki numbers. I think it should be addressed.

Hello! I think we could probably use a post for requesting tags on the log and BBS communities for our characters. I've seen quite a few people asking about tags for their character on Plurk recently, and while you guys have been great about getting to the Plurk requests, some people don't know to ask or may get overlooked if they don't think to ping a mod.

Tag request comments would be easier to process on your end, and having a post to request tags would alleviate player confusion about what to do if they don't have a tag set up yet.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm not sure how feasible it would be (especially since the game runs on a 3-1 ratio), but would it be possible to have particular setting details per month/cycle available to players?

One of the things I've found handy in coming up with plots or playing around with the setting is having extra details on what might be going on with the setting at a particular time, such as if there's a lot more intoxicating cherry blossoms blowing more than usual or if the old gods seems more uneasy about something going on with the new gods or even the weather. While events are good fodder for that, they're usually over a few days rather than a whole period.

Shinki Memory clarification - "The Low Bar" conversation

[personal profile] volksdaemon 2016-10-25 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
A couple of us on Discord were trying to figure out "the low bar" where a God could say something to a Shinki without triggering ayakashi/blight and we were linked to this question on the update OOC notice and then the mod plurk discussion linked on the same page:
Spoopy Frika1 months ago
"used to be friends" doesn't give any specific information to the shinki about their life, really. It can just as easily be read as "I was a god and followed you like a creeper".

We unofficially were discussing this as variations of the "I know you" line being okay, versus the linked question explaining that something about the shinki's past specifically being the off-limits part.

Anyway, we felt like this was the kind of thing that would be awesome to have moved up to the FAQ/Shinki 101 areas proper. There may be other things that came out of that FAQ update OOC page too. Please and thank you!

Regain Suggestion

[personal profile] volksdaemon 2016-10-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Bonus God Power / Shinki Power as a Regain option - obviously fairly expensive. Maybe somewhere in the 25K-50K range?

So many of us aren't completely sure when we app which God we're going to end up with that I think this would be a really fun option to gain an additional power relevant to the God you ended up as. IDK if this is possible to make a comparable option for Shinki, since there may not be a lower level than the Hafuri option when it comes to keeping close to canon.

Wondering if we should get some world building brainstormed? Right now we have a handful of player made businesses and a ton of temples. How about world building for the Heavens? I know this is pretty up in the air in Noragami but figured it might be a good idea to flesh out the Heavens sometimes. Maybe abandoned ruins or temples, ancient libraries, mystical forests, soul graveyards, old battlefields? Just something to flesh out the heavens and give people more options for locations to thread at and opportunities to use powers and shinkis.

Hello mods!! I love the game as a whole, so I thought I'd compile some suggestions I had for it!

I notice that you guys do events a little differently by making just one intro log and event combo per month instead of doing them separately. I think that's a pretty cool idea, but it's also pretty tricky to keep things interesting for everyone involved. Since joining the game, I've noticed a pattern of all of the events lacking in hooks that are engaging for either new players, old players or both, so I'm going to try to give a few tips that I think might help you guys out if you aren't already keeping them in mind!

The past couple of months especially I’ve noticed a lot of reactions on plurk that amount to “Hmm, I’m not sure what to do with this event” after the intro log has been announced, and then after the prompts have gone up. There are a few problems I’ve noticed with the intro logs since I’ve been in the game. A lot of prompts in the logs don't take into consideration that new characters haven't always met their assigned shinki or god yet. Sometimes they also don't take into account that while there are actions that can be done in the log, technically, they aren't always the ideal thing to roleplay. For example, you guys have offered a lot of scenarios where clues were provided that a character could find to help solve the "case" behind the scenario, but the characters never have any actual effect on the scenario itself, the clues are usually handed out late so no real plotting can be done with them, and the entire thing is planned out from start to finish so there's no real point in trying different things because the route is already set in stone. Basically, you get a clue, get maybe one thread out of it, get the bragging rights to helping with the event, but really no character development because not much happened.

I think a lot would be solved if things were left a little more open ended. You don't have to necessarily end the event all in the same post or even month, for one! For example, leaving clues around and letting characters get together and investigate and plan and have to actually work to get the answer would be a lot more fun to thread out. The outcome could change depending on how the characters approach a situation, and that in itself could actually give more ideas for events in the future. In fact, tying events into one another would help a ton with the flow of things. I definitely see you guys trying for this with things like the clean up logs following big events, but that’s more of a flat cause and effect. Instead, I would try for something that doesn’t stop short there and instead continues on like more of a storyline.

Also, I think light "break" months are definitely necessary to avoid burnout, but player plots shouldn't always be factored in, and they should maybe be once every third month, depending on what's happened recently. They really need to be done carefully because characters who app in that round will have less excitement to immediately bond with other characters.

But this brings me to one thing that I've noticed: you guys have really great TDM prompts a lot of the time! I was actually wondering why prompts that make it to the TDM aren't ever brought to the game, because some of them are so much more fun that a little more expansion could have made them a plot themselves. Even the super light ones could work excellently for little prompt ideas on a break month! I remember this TDM in particular had a full selection of wonderful prompts that would have worked just as wonderfully expanded into game plots.

Like just to throw a wild idea out there, some sort of outbreak with the ayakashi due to the large influx of new god and shinki. Maybe some of the god and shinki have to temporarily deal with ayakashi-like symptoms, like growing monstrous parts or getting the urge to eat other god and shinki. It could be a virus or a "glitch" of some sort in the death-system or any reason behind it, really, but it's just a quick and easy way to give a ton of people options to play out a wide variety of things. People will need to react to and play out the drama of it, those who don't want their characters to be changed will have to deal with others trying to eat them or their friends turning monstrous and possibly risking death, and there will have to be a way to come together and solve it. The main problem with this one is what would new characters do, or how would characters with inactive/hiatused partners participate? So you would have to find a work around to allow for both of these groups of players to join in. My throwaway suggestion in this case would be new characters being given some vital key to fixing the monstrous issue whether or not they change into monsters themselves, so it encourages more interaction between new and old players.

Now that was just a random sloppily thrown together idea but I hope that gets the point across!

Another big point that comes to mind and ties in with this is that I'm not sure if you guys as a mod team have decided the direction for the game. It's based on a canon, and the idea behind it is really cool and fun to play with, but it's not strictly horror, adventure, mission based or anything— I wouldn't be able to list what it's supposed to be. I'm not saying you guys have to limit it to just one of these things, but I do think that as a team behind the scenes, having a direction you want to go is key. Since Noragami is an ongoing canon especially, you can't realistically keep following canon and just floating with what the goal is. I'm not sure if you guys have a goal for what the NPCs are aiming for behind the scenes or any explanations, but if you do it should definitely come out more! If you don't, I think it would be a great idea to get together and talk out what you want that to be, because just having that backbone adds a ton to the game in my opinion. Basically, if you haven't already, separate from canon just enough to have a direction. It doesn't have to be overarching plot if you don't want, but even a "they brought the characters here to accomplish X and Y" or something would be good, if you don't have it already. Having this be more prominent would really help in tying the events together and make for a more engaging experience for players, as well.

Along these lines, I notice that the premise of the game really contradicts the actual tone that the game has. You have this really heavy setting (the Gods are given the responsibility and weight of a life of at least one other dead person, their shinki, who have nothing to go off of but their feelings) but the tone of every event comes across as a lot lighter (like the big monster of the school event being literal jell-o felt a little lackluster in seriousness, and then light logs like spring cleaning, a picnic (even with the fire honestly), etc). So it gives big mixed messages. I'm not canon familiar, but based off of what I have learned through researching it for RPing here, I feel like it should be largely serious with some light hearted more animated things on the sidelines rather than the main focus. The concept itself tells me that it's a serious thing, honestly, and I find it strange that the only serious things seem to be coming from the players rather than the mods, events or actual tone of the game. This doesn't mean that every event has to be serious, but that when you do have a serious event, it shouldn't be downplayed with too much light stuff. Instead, always offer an opt-out for those not interested in playing the super serious that month, and go all out! I feel like every serious event has been downplayed in some way. For example, the fires at the picnic, which honestly even from the set up seemed small and easily avoidable and therefore not that serious, were sort of excused away by making Amaterasu appear as a young, blameless girl who needs to be protected. There was absolutely no sign of what was really behind the fires, no clues to lead into anything in the future, so it really just felt like the fires were a reason to feel bad for Amaterasu instead of cause any development or action for the playable characters, if that makes sense.

I'm really sorry this is so huge, but I've just been compiling various things to try and bring real suggestions and points to you guys instead of unhelpfully saying what wasn't working. If you have any questions on any of my points, please ask!! But I hope you'll at least keep them in mind for the future. Thank you for reading!

Hellooo, I have a suggestion I've been thinking about for a little bit!! So since the game is 3:1 there's a feeling of having both a lot and a little time to fill from month to month— what I mean is that, since I (the player example) have 3 OOC days to account for 1 day of my character's IC behavior, sometimes the days can feel a little hard to fill if there isn't a player plot separate from the monthly intro plot going on!

Now, this is my personal experience I'm speaking from so I dunno how many people can relate, but the suggestion I was thinking about is maybe having something like a monthly OOC post that gives a few quick flavor things happening either in the heavens or in the local human areas?? That way people who might be lagging behind in stuff to do with their characters for a month can have some prompt ideas and people with plenty going on can keep on keeping on. Kind of like an expanded prayers post, but with more than just prayers... Things like the atmosphere of the heavens (as in, how are NPCs treating PC gods/shinki this month, are player actions from the last event impacting the amount/type of ayakashi around (for example, if the demon had been defeated differently, would that have had lasting impacts besides the destruction??)), what local things are happening outside the heavens that could be of interest, etc.

Actually now that I'm reading my own suggestion, it could be things like the test drive prompts! A lot of people have fun with those and they're generally just things for flavor that don't interfere with the main plot but still stick to the tone/action of the game. That way there are still monthly events relating to the main stuff and mini things for people interested in playing with them that give more... depth, I suppose, to the overall worldbuilding of the game.

JUST A THOUGHT...... thank u for reading

Plotting/NPC profile request

Just here requesting an NPC (named/profiled, not necessarily played by a mod) that's somewhere down the chain of command from Amaterasu and Suijin/Raijin/Fuujin, maybe one of their shinki?, that Schuldig could successfully read the mind of.

... And if it's too complicated to pre-plan what he'd be looking for, maybe I would like it played out for one thread. He'd primarily be looking for what efforts the Old Gods are taking to have determined that What's Going On isn't in Japan and further steps now that they know that.

I didn't put this on the event post b/c I wasn't sure if that NPC could be found at the festival or not.

Rolling in here with a plot suggestion, because I've been thinking about this a little bit and it seems like it could be pretty fun and interesting with the right setup.

So with the whole rumour about the dark forest being a roaming ground for forgotten gods, I was thinking maybe some kind of plot where sabotage/magical weirdness/spirit shenanigans/big bad ayakashi/insert thing of choice here leads the forest to start drawing in and capturing current gods - whether with spooky shadows/ghosts, living plants, more effectively mesmerising lures than the fireflies, all of the above, or something else - would be an interesting spin. Possibly, with the rumour and to put some definite stakes on getting those gods back, to drain their sustaining force to try and bring back the forgotten gods? Or more likely to just feed whatever is causing the problem if it's a monster/demon/spirit/magical thing, but there's a lot of options there as to what the threat could be.

In any case, it'd be the sort of thing where people would choose to have their characters taken and then the ones that are left get to figure out what's going on and mount rescue missions and all that sort of thing, probably with a boss fight of some kind at the end. That's about all I have in terms of ideas for it at the moment, but I thought it was worth leaving here to see if it would work as a plot.

Please reconsider gating missions behind ten thousand followers. That can take months of considerable tagging to achieve, and meanwhile anyone new to the game gets to watch from the sidelines, which isn't fun. Maybe not exactly the same but something to similar veins.

Hi there! In looking through the prayers and missions, I wanted to make a few suggestions and voice some concerns that I had.

In the past, we've had missions that have only required 1,000 EXP/10,000 followers. Usually this condition is relatively easy to get, and that's definitely not my complaint. However, in the most recent round, I've noticed that the conditions for all but one mission listed right now are double that. This might just be that all earlier missions have been fulfilled, but this creates something of a wide gap of points between players. As it stands right now, only 5-10% of characters currently in the game can actually take advantage of the mission system.

There are also quite a few missions (at least 7) that make reference to an NPC god and/or goddess, but there is no active information about the gods that are mentioned. Speaking from personal experience, I was not aware of Ameterasu being an NPC goddess until there was an event that specifically involved her; and even then, I knew very little about her within the setting itself.

Both of these issues create a barrier of entry for those new players who want to get involved, but either 1) do not know who the NPCs are and what their significance is to the overall setting; and 2) would like to one day participate in missions, but are either deterred or otherwise unable to due to the ramping conditions.

My personal suggestions would be to look into front-loading missions and having difficulties scale proportionally. For example, if you have 8 missions on your list, having 3 at the 1,000 EXP/10,000 Followers price point, 2 at 2,000 EXP/20,000 Followers, 2 at 3,000 EXP/30,000 Followers, and 1 at 4000EXP/40,000 Followers; each with ramping difficulties based upon how rare they are. Obviously missions that have story requirements should stay as is.

For NPCs, I feel like having a page that gives a short blurb about each would be extremely helpful. Obviously we can look up who the god or goddess is in the greater pantheon, but giving players an idea of who they are in the setting and what they have been up to would be extremely helpful.

I always love seeing what the mods come up with for this game, and playing with everyone here. I hope this helps!
