1. The characters definitely don't have to be humanized! And shapeshifting would be considered an ability and they would be more than welcome to keep that.
2. Gods can have more than one shinki. All gods (aside from canon examples that directly contradict this) will start with one shinki slot, however if two shinki that are apping wish to belong to the same god, that can be arranged as long as it is mentioned in the application.
3. ICly it will come down to two different ways: If the god wishes to release the shinki, they will just tell them they are released and the shinki will be randomly shuffled to a new god (unless otherwise requested). If a shinki wants to leave their god, they'll have to ask the Heaves for a reassignment.
4. If a character is dropped, it means that the Heavens have lost control of that particular soul. Obviously, their working of whatever magic they're using is not particularly stable. So, IC, the characters can assume whatever makes sense surrounding the situation. Some might even be able to properly connect the dots and realize that that soul has Gone Home.
